SIM Card in Bosnia — Complete Tourist Guide 2026

Published September 1, 2026 · 5 min read

⚠️ Important: Bosnia is NOT in the EU

Your EU roaming plan does not apply in Bosnia and Herzegovina. If you use your home SIM card without checking your roaming rates, you could face very high charges. We strongly recommend getting a local SIM card on arrival.

Why You Need a Local SIM Card

Bosnia and Herzegovina is not a member of the European Union and is not part of the EU roaming zone. This means that EU regulations requiring free or low-cost roaming between EU countries do not apply here. Travellers arriving from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands or any other EU country will be charged international roaming rates by their home provider — often several euros per MB of data.

A local Bosnian SIM card costs between 20–40 KM (~€10–20) and gives you fast 4G/5G internet for your entire stay.

The Three Mobile Operators in Bosnia

Bosnia has three mobile network operators. Coverage varies by region, so the best choice depends on where you are travelling.

1. BH Telecom — Best Overall Coverage

The largest operator in Bosnia with 42% market share. Best coverage in Sarajevo, Tuzla, Zenica and central Bosnia. Also works in neighbouring Western Balkans countries.

3. HT Eronet — Best for Western Bosnia

Third operator, strongest in Herzegovina and western Bosnia (Mostar, Split corridor). Good option if you are heading to the coast.

Which SIM Card is Best for Tuzla?

BH Telecom is the best choice for the Tuzla region — it has the strongest coverage in northeastern Bosnia including Tuzla, Kalesija, Živinice, Lukavac and Srebrenik. Their Tourist 1 package at 20 KM gives you 40 GB for 10 days which is more than enough for most visits.

Where to Buy a SIM Card

  • Tuzla Airport (Dubrave) — BH Telecom available at the terminal
  • Any BH Telecom, m:tel or Eronet shop in Tuzla city
  • Post offices and kiosks throughout Bosnia
  • Online (eSIM) before your trip

eSIM vs Physical SIM

If your phone supports eSIM (most phones from 2020 onwards), you can buy a virtual SIM card before you land. BH Telecom and m:tel both offer eSIM options. This saves time at the airport.

If your phone does not support eSIM or you are unsure — just buy a physical SIM at the airport for 20 KM. The staff will help you activate it.
