Sarajevo from Tuzla — The Perfect Weekend Trip by Rental Car

Just 130 km and an hour and a half separates Tuzla from one of the most beautiful cities in the Balkans. With a rental car, Sarajevo is the perfect destination for a day trip or weekend getaway.

Distance

~130 km

Drive

~1.5 hrs

Motorway

A1 Tuzla–Sarajevo

Why Drive Rather Than Take the Bus?

There is a bus between Tuzla and Sarajevo, but it runs at fixed times, is not always reliable and leaves you no freedom to stop where you like or return when it suits you.

With a rental car you set off when you want, stop at places along the way like Zenica or Olovo, and return without waiting for a departure time.

What to See in Sarajevo

🕌

Baščaršija

The heart of old Sarajevo. Coppersmiths, mosques, coffee houses — allow 1-2 hours to soak it in.

🏛️

Vijećnica

The restored Austro-Hungarian city hall on the banks of the Miljacka. Free entry.

🌉

Latin Bridge

The bridge where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated — the spark that started World War I.

🎯

Tunnel of Hope

Museum of the Sarajevo siege. Essential for understanding the city's recent history.

🏔️

Trebević

Cable car to the summit — panoramic views of Sarajevo and the ruins of the Olympic bobsled track.

Sarajevo Coffee

No better place for traditional Bosnian coffee than one of the old kafanas in the old town.

Practical Tips

Parking in Sarajevo

Parking in the centre is paid. We recommend the Holiday Inn or Skenderija car parks — close to Baščaršija, ~3-5 KM/hour.

Fuel on the way

There are several petrol stations on the A1 motorway. Fill up in Tuzla before you leave.

When to set off

Leave early, between 7-8am, to avoid traffic. Weekend traffic on the motorway is heavier.

Where to eat

Ćevapi at Željin or Hadžića are legendary. Burek at Petica bakery is a classic must-try.
