Flying Home to Bosnia from the USA or Canada?
Your Complete Car Rental Guide
Published August 29, 2026 · 6 min read
Every summer, thousands of Bosnian Americans and Bosnian Canadians make the journey home. Most fly into Tuzla Airport (TZL Dubrave) — the closest airport to Tuzla, Kalesija, Živinice, Srebrenica and the surrounding region. Here is everything you need to know about renting a car when you land.
Why Tuzla Airport is the Right Choice
If your family is in northeastern Bosnia — Tuzla, Kalesija, Živinice, Lukavac, Gradačac, Srebrenik or Teočak — Tuzla Airport is significantly closer than Sarajevo. The drive from Tuzla Airport to Tuzla city is just 20 minutes. From Sarajevo Airport it would be over 2 hours.
Most flights from the US and Canada connect through Vienna, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Zürich, with Wizz Air or Turkish Airlines operating the final leg to Tuzla.
Long-Stay Car Rental — What You Need to Know
Unlike European visitors who typically rent for 7-14 days, most Bosnian Americans stay for 4 to 8 weeks during the summer. This changes everything about how you should approach your car rental.
30+ day rental
Contact us directly for a custom long-stay rate. We offer significantly better pricing for monthly rentals than any per-day calculation.
10% discount for 7+ days
Automatically applied — no coupon needed. The longer you stay, the better the value.
No mileage limits
Drive anywhere in Bosnia — Sarajevo, Mostar, the coast, the mountains. Unlimited mileage included in every rental.
Free vehicle swap
Staying for a month? Need a bigger car for the first two weeks when the whole family is there? We can arrange a vehicle swap.
Do You Need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
Bosnia and Herzegovina accepts US and Canadian driving licences directly — no International Driving Permit is legally required. However, having an IDP is always recommended as an additional document when dealing with local authorities. IDPs are available through AAA (USA) or CAA (Canada) for around $20.
Payment — No Credit Card Required
Many Bosnian Americans prefer to travel with cash. That is not a problem for us. We accept:
- US Dollars (USD) — accepted at a fair daily rate
- Euros (EUR) — preferred
- Bosnian Marks (KM) — local currency
- No credit card required
- ATM available at Tuzla Airport
Deposit Options
Cash deposit — 500 KM (~$280)
Refunded in full on the day you return the vehicle.
Super Casco insurance — +15 KM/day (~$8)
No deposit at all. Full damage coverage included. Recommended for long stays.
Which Car is Right for Your Trip?
Most families returning from the US travel with more luggage and more people. Here is our recommendation:
Economy (Hyundai i20, VW Polo)
Solo travellers or couples — from $25/day
🧳 2 medium suitcases
Comfort (Škoda Octavia, VW Golf)
Small families — from $35/day
🧳 3-4 suitcases
SUV / Larger
Large families with lots of luggage — from $50/day
🧳 5+ suitcases, perfect for road trips
Can You Drive to Croatia, Serbia or Montenegro?
Yes. With advance notice, we permit cross-border driving to Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia and North Macedonia. A green card is provided. This is perfect if you want to visit the Adriatic coast or travel through the region during your stay.
Meet & Greet at Arrivals
After a 15+ hour journey from the US, the last thing you want is to figure out transportation. Our agent will be waiting for you directly at the arrivals terminal at Tuzla Airport — with your name on a sign. Drive away in minutes.
Free Delivery to Your Village or Town
